Here's to a long weekend!

And more rain! Well, at least the long weekend is exciting. We're finally drying out, although I'm not sure when I'll really be able to work the girls again. It's just too soggy.

I will say that all the rain has gotten Adiva way more used to being in a stall, and she is content to be in her stall instead of crowding Anni in hers.

I miss spending time working them. They really need the attention too. Hopefully the ground will be dry enough by the end of the week and we can get back onto some sort of real routine. Until then, pats on the nose will have to do!

Rain, rain and more rain

So it's finally raining here - I haven't updated because things are status quo of sorts - we just keep working on lunging and manners. Like getting used to clippers, dealing with being rinsed off, that kind of thing.

It started raining yesterday at 12:15 - both girls spooked at first like they didn't know what rain was! Then they settled in, and were in their stalls when I came back to feed dinner.

This morning it wasn't too bad - both girls were wet but outside. Tonight, however, was another freaking story. Both girls were bunched in one stall, happily munching hay. Their paddock is under water. Sigh Luckily it's not the entire paddock, but neither really want to go out there.

So I load them down with hay in both stalls, but I don't lock them in. While both are really good about being stalled, I haven't gotten them used to being in for any extended time. So before I keep them in all night, I want to gradually build it up. Besides, if they are going to stay in anyway, no reason to confine them.

We'll have to see how things look tomorrow morning. It's been raining non stop all day, with no end in sight. Driveway to the barn was flooded tonight - no telling what I'll find in the morning. Good thing I have rubber boots!

I know, I suck.

Sorry guys. A lot has been happening lately so I’m sorry I haven’t updated. Work has been hard, and I think that’s been the biggest deterrent from blogging. The girls are fantastic. We’ve been lunging and last Friday, May 8, my trainer Kristin came out. I wanted her to evaluate the girls and give me a good focused start. We lunged them both. HARD. Kristin is in love with them both, of course, and thinks Adiva has some real potential. Anni, unfortunately, had a little hitch in her right hind. We had hoped we were working it out of her, but it looks like it’s still there. No way to know if it’s weakness or injury, but we’re going to start using some massage techniques and look into getting the chiropractor out. We are going to take things slow and give her time to finish growing too. Farrier was out on Monday the 11 and he thinks she’s gotten taller since he was first out. Sigh - she’s gonna end up 17 hands. I just know it. Which is ok - she has all the time in the world to grow into herself. She’s just the sweetest horse on the planet. Everyone who meets her just has to stroke her muzzle, and of course, she’s totally okay with that!

I wish I could explain what they have given to me. What they’ve showed me. How they’ve helped. But I’m sure you all know how I feel. ;)

Dentist day!!!!!

Monday, May 4, 2009

Dr. Banner came out today to work on the girls’ teeth. My biggest shock was learning the girls are older than I thought! Anni is four, and Adiva is at least five! I’m glad, actually, because now I can really get them working and I don’t have to be as worried about Anni’s joints. Anni’s mouth was quite good - no wolf teeth and just a few ramps to work on. Adiva’s mouth was actually a bit worse. She has wolf teeth, but they are positioned to where they are at her molars. We’re gonna leave them and just watch. She also has some ramps, but they were a bit more than Anni’s. Luckily, both girls were perfect angels, and we’re done for a year. Now I need to get some bridles so I can get them ready to be ridden!

In honor of the Derby, Anni got worked today. She’s really getting the hang of lunging, and is learning to constantly pay attention to whomever is lunging. I’ve been having K lunge her both so I can watch her and in case she freaks (he’s way stronger than I am). Plus, I like that the girls are learning to listen to other people. I need to have him lunge Adiva next, just so she gets more used to it, too.
