Happy 2 months!!!!

Thursday, April 30, 2009

It’s been two months. I really can’t believe it. I mean, it feels like yesterday when we popped them off the trailer. And yet things are so perfect it feels like I’ve had them for ever. Adiva is totally attached to me. She had a few little idiosyncrasies when I first got her - she didn’t want anyone walking up to her and rubbing her face in the pasture, wouldn’t let me mess with her when she was eating hay, really didn’t want to go into her stall for me - and now she’s a big puppy dog. Follows me everywhere, lets me kiss her nose over the fence, loves me to scratch her when she’s eating. She’s such a cutie. It was her turn today. She’s always so ready to go. She’s always easy too. She loves the work. She really does. I do need to get the cavessons fixed so I can step up her training. She’s raring to go, as always.

Today is Anni’s turn. But…my legs are extremely sore, and I’m not thinking I want to push myself. So I ask K if he wants to learn how. He does, so this way he can learn how to lunge and he’s way stronger than I am. So if she pulls her little tantrum, he can stop her. They do great together - she’s listening to him and he’s listening to me. I forgot how much fun it is to teach!!!! I do have to say I’m a good trainer. I can easily see what’s going on - what body language needs to be fixed and when the horse is really working or not. This is lots of fun and so good for Anni too - she needs to learn to listen to anyone, not just me. She seemed to enjoy it too.

I’m glad they both think work is fun. Makes things so much easier. Now I just need to fix those cavessons so I can start using the Vienna reins.

Another present!

Monday, April 27, 2009

I got the cavessons today. So off I go to work them. As I’m grooming Adiva, B shows up with a tree on a trailer. So, I’m not sure if I want to work them or not. While I want them to get used to all sorts of things going on, I’m not sure I need to put them thru that kind of test so soon in our work. Usually the tractor doesn’t bother them, but I don’t want them distracted by the tree moving around. I groom Adiva then Anni, then put them back in their stalls. I decide to wait until B has the tree in the ground to grab Adiva and try on her cavesson. Noseband is a bit big - gonna have to sew that - but I get her all ready and lunge her anyway. She’s golden. A true pro. Even stops halfway thru and turns around on her own to go the other way. Yeah, she’s good. I can tell she’s bored with lunging now. I’ll try the Vienna reins next time and see what she thinks of those.

I give Anni the day off - it’s getting dark, and she gets an extra day off due to her age. I do try on her caves son. Again, noseband too big. Funny, but oh well. I go so far as to try Adiva’s on her, and it’s too big too. Guess I get to do some sewing soon! In the meantime, I’ll just stick to the halters. Here’s Adiva - I’ll get some of Anni next time!

Work has been a bear, so I do apologize for not posting more often.

My surcingle came today!!! Well, last night, but let’s not be picky. ;) Adiva was first today. She’s usually first, just because she’s the easier one, and I like to start easy. I groom her up, and she’s spooking at everything. Big spooks. Lucky for me, her spook consists of jumping in place and planting all four. I like that spook. LOL I almost back out - if she’s not on her game, I don’t want to push her - but she has to learn to deal. I figured I’ll just take everything in stride and see how far we get. I put on her boots and grab the surcingle. I let her smell it, then slip it on, slowly cinching it up. She doesn’t care. I keep it kinda loose until we get to my lunging area, then I tighten it. Again, she doesn’t care. She’s such a good mare! She lunges very well - we’re working on figuring out a good language and she’s very in tune with me. She does get quite tired by the time we’re done - she’s really thinking about what I want, and starting to enjoy trotting around loosening her muscles!

Anni’s next, and she’s less spooky than Adiva, but she has a very distinct personality, and I can’t tell if it’s because she’s young, or a TB, or just her. No matter what it is, I really enjoy working with her. She’s a thinker - and a youngin - and I love it! She’s a bit more apprehensive about the surcingle but is more interested in chewing on my gloves. I think it’s because they smell like peppermints! She lets me cinch it without incident and we’re off! She’s so freaking good to the left. She’s a strong pony tho, and pulls constantly. I start to give and release, in big but slow moves, and that’s when she starts to stretch down and you can actually see her back come up. When it does, she slows down and really steps under herself. I’m so pleased she is doing this on her own. Plus, she’s learning to carry herself and not lean on me to carry her. When we go to the right, however, we hit a snag. She throws the temper tantrum again. Not as bad as before, so I’m trying to wait it out and not cause a bigger scene. But she does it twice more. Ok, I don’t know how to deal with this. She’s almost scared/nervous when she does it, so that means that she A) knows she shouldn’t and B) is worried she’s gonna get hurt because she did do it. So, is she trying to get out of work due to pain? Is she being stubborn and just doesn’t want to work? Am I confusing her somehow? I start back at the beginning and have her on a small circle. I just focus on her hip - getting it forward - and apply the give and take theory so she can’t grab n go. She gets it! I mean, I can see her getting this! So I let her on a bigger circle, and she does great. I know she’s tired, and that helps, but I’m really proud of her. She tried, really hard, to do what I wanted. I need to get some liniment for her neck. It’s where she’s the sorest. I need to be careful when I start using the side reins so that I strengthen her neck without hurting her. She seems to enjoy the work tho, so I’ll keep it short, fun, and positive!

The lunging continues

I worked both girls again yesterday. Things are going in spurts - pretty usual for babies. Hell, pretty normal for my luck anyway. Adiva is doing well, but having issues learning to whoa consistently. She doesn't pull or balk, so I know she'll get it soon.

Anni, on the other hand, is almost getting worse to the right. She's way strong, and way lazy. Constantly pulling on me, and looking for any opportunity to get out of working. I think I just need to find a way to make it fun for her. Or prove to her that she has to do what I ask. Or just wait her out. She'll come around. She's smart enough!

My tack should be here by next week. I think getting those vienna reins onto her will add a whole new level to this. I'm hoping she stops leaning. She's gonna rip my arms outta the sockets. Luckily she's not mean about it - I'm thinking a lot of all this is just baby stuff, and she'll grow out of it the more she's exposed to it.

Weekend recap

What a wonderfully productive weekend!!! April 17-19, 2009

It started on Friday when I got off of work. I decided to lunge the girls. Yeah, call me crazy. I figure I’ll start on the lead line, just getting them to walk and halt around me. Things don’t go as well as I’d hoped, but neither horse has a hissy and I don’t get trampled. Adiva’s biggest problem was she would turn to me every time she stopped. Anni was too interested in grazing to work very well, so I called it a day. They both handled the new experience well, and I didn’t want to push them. But OMG, they were so cute when I put their protective boots on! High stepping it like they were circus ponies!!!!

Saturday K came out to help. I had planned on working them in their paddock - three nice sides of fence and good ground - so K suggested we bring the lunge line and use that. Uh, too soon, too soon! As I led Adiva out, she automatically starts running around me at the end of the lead. OK, maybe the lunge line will work. I switched leads, and let her drift out a bit. She obviously has done this before because she was an angel. Walk, trot, halt both directions and when she stopped, she stayed out on the circle and faced direction of go. Didn’t turn to me at all. I couldn’t believe how well she did.

Then it was Anni’s turn. She wasn’t sure about the lunge whip, and we spent some time just getting her used to it. Not sure if she just used it as excuse to act up, or if she’s never seen one before or what, but she quickly realized it wasn’t anything scary and we set to work. She’s a lazy little bugger, but did well to the left. To the right, however, we had a typical 3 year old tantrum. She was working ok at the walk, but at one point in the trot decided she was done and tried to turn and go. When she turned to the left tho, she got the lunge line over her head. She then proceeded to finish the turn left so she was facing me, and started to back up. Into the fence. The electric fence. When she realized where she was, she tried to rear, but the lunge line was right over her poll (lucky break for me) so that pressure stopped her. So she stands there, kind of wild eyed, and I just talk to her. I still have the lunge line, and I’m just waiting for her to turn to look at me before I approach. A few seconds later, she lowers her head and takes a step towards me, so I move in quick to untangle her. She’s not stressed at all, so we resume training. She’s not wanting to bend to the right - she just keeps swinging her hindquarters around and that’s causing me to have to get more behind her to drive and it’s spooking her a bit. I reel her in on a smaller circle and work on moving forward, not just pivoting around, and send her back out to see if she’s got it. Yup, she does, even at the trot. I’m so proud of her I can barely breathe. She has one moment where she thinks about trying to get away again, but sighs and keeps on trotting when I flick the whip at her. I stop her and call it a day. I really couldn’t ask for anything more from either of them.

Sunday I decide to bathe them. Really bathe them. Scrub the tails, clean the teats, wash the face. Anni actually falls asleep during her bath, and only wakes up when a strange truck pulls in the drive. Lo and behold, it’s Scott, the farrier! He was driving by and saw us so wanted to check on the girls. Both girls vied for his attention the whole time. It was so cute to watch both of them push their noses into his chest for face rubs. They really have no concept of personal space, but they aren’t too pushy about it. Clingy, I would call it. He’s happy about the way their feet look, and heads out so I can bathe Adiva. She’s equally good for her bath, and I realize how much easier mares are. I don’t have any sheathes to clean!!!!! By the time I’m done with Adiva, the wind has picked up a bit, and the sun is behind clouds. I really don’t want to turn her out, because she loves to roll when she’s all wet, but A) it’ll take her at least an hour to dry if I hand walk her and B) it’s not like I’m taking them to a show. I mean, yes, I wanted them clean, but it was more to get them used to the process and make sure I didn’t have any problem areas to work thru. Plus, part of the fun of a bath is rolling right after, so I let her straight out. Anni was dry when she went out because Scott had come by, and she isn’t the slob that Adiva is anyway, so she’s still clean. Adiva, of course, hit the first patch of dirt she found, went all the way over, and was promptly a mud bug. Oh well, she looked happy. They both went off to nap after that, and I actually had to wake them a short time later for dinner. Really lucked out with these girls. Really really.

So, here's the story

I am working my butt off at my 'day job' because of some changes there, so I'm having less time to blog. The girls are still great. Very loving since I got back. Adiva especially. She's been a little standoffish about me petting her face. Oh, she'd let me, but didn't want me to. Now, she demands me to love on her.

Adiva's ear is healing well. The incision where the vet explored is all closed. The gunk coming out now doesn't smell, and there's way less of it.

Anni is getting fat! Now it's time to get her working so I can build up her topline. I've probably already said that here, but it's late, I'm tired, and I can't wait to get them lunging. This weekend, barring unforeseen. I'll let y'all know how that goes! ;)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know

Sorry I've been missing. Had the chance to go visit P and couldn't say no. The girls are happy and were very well taken care of. Here are some pics...

Farrier day!

Sunday, April 5, 2009

Today both girls get trimmed. I’m very excited - I’ve been working very hard with them, and I can’t wait to see how they act. I get there early, feed and groom the girls. I also braid their manes. Both girls are getting really sweaty under their thick manes, and are growing willy nilly so I want to train them now. They are learning to stand quietly, and both take naps while I groom and braid them. So proud!

Adiva was very good - stepped on the farrier once but otherwise was great, even when he burnt a line in a crack that was forming. Anni was equally good. She only tried to lay down once, which is a huge step from the first time she was done. Luckily, my farrier is a saint and just laughed it all off. I really lucked out with him.

The rest of the day was spent at a horse expo day, so the girls got a break. I was just too tired when I got home to do much else. Not that they cared - they just love any kind of attention, and so long as you love on them and give them cookies, they are happy. Work is highly overrated in their book. LOL, I don’t really blame them - work is sometimes way harder than it needs to be!

Ear update

Saturday, April 4, 2009

Adiva’s ear is smaller. I just know it! I can’t wait to flush it out. And I can tell the stuff coming out of it is different. Hmmm. And today, for the first time, she’s really not wanting me to touch it. That isn’t like her at all. Granted, there’s a lot of activity on the street - people walking, biking, kids yelling on the next street - and she’s not 100% focused on me. But she doesn’t want me pushing that catheter into her ear. Hold the phone - I can’t get it in. WTF? I push the flush in while trying to push the catheter in deeper and it’s hitting resistance. OMG, is it healing? I mean, why else would it feel that way? And the scar tissue is softer. And smaller. I’m super optimistic that this might actually finally heal.

Farrier is due out tomorrow. Can’t wait to hear what he says - the girls are so much better about picking up their feet and standing quietly. Adiva’s feet are kinda long because she wasn’t done with Anni last time. At least now they’ll be on the same schedule. And I think he’ll be very happy with the condition of Anni’s feet. I’ve been putting moisturizer on and I think her feet are looking awesome. We’ll see what he thinks.

TGIF!

Friday, April 3, 2009

The girls meet me at the gate for breakfast again. Either they are really hungry (tho IDK why) or they are starting to get this routine and want to make things easier for me. Nah, they are hungry! ;)

I decide to leave the ear alone today. First, it looks a lot smaller. Can that even be? I mean, it’s scar tissue. Can that just resorb? Interesting. Second, the weather is suspect. Can’t tell if it’s going to rain or not. And you can’t trust the radar anymore - this is summertime in Florida, and it rains when it wants even if there aren’t clouds in the sky. So I just watch them eat. It’s so relaxing. And wow they are fat and shiny! Might be time to re-evaluate their feed.

The ear saga continues...

Thursday, April 2, 2009

Time to mess with the ear again. I’ve decided to get a small catheter and flush that ear out just to see what’s going on. It’s still spewing gunk, and I want to know why. I stick the catheter in it, and it goes the whole way in - odd. Adiva is a doll thru is all - well, she tries! I’m sure it feels weird, but there’s nothing really coming out that’s nasty, and I can’t feel where the flush is building up anywhere. When I’m finished and drying the would off, all this stuff starts bubbling up. Well, oozing is a better word. And it’s tinted with blue (which is the color of the flush I used) so flushing it must have done something. Guess we’ll see what it looks like in the a.m.

Karma‘s got a mean left hook…A.K.A. It must be summer in Florida

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

I had planned on going to the tack store after work. I also needed hay. The plan was to take the truck to work, get hay, drop it off, go to the tack store a half hour north, and be done with it. But…I work half way to the tack store. So, shouldn’t I just run up after work first? Yup, that makes sense.

Work sucks today, so I decide to play an April Fool’s joke on some friends. Hehehe, it was really good, too!

So after work I toodle my way on up to the tack store, and while I’m shopping, it starts raining. OK, not good. But, maybe it’s not raining in Melbourne. I rush home, and you should see the effing clouds rolling in from the south. So, if I jump in the truck and race to the feed store, I may just make it. Lightning strikes right outside the feed store. Yay. NOT. Did I mention I need to get gas, too? Sigh. The clouds are right overhead…sky opens up as soon as the first bale gets into the truck. Continues the entire way to the barn, even with the stop at the gas station. And of course, the sun is out. I’m actually in the middle of a break in the clouds, and it’s still pouring. Of course. Wanna know when the rain stops? Yup, as soon as the last bale gets unloaded.

And whether that’s Karma kicking me in the ass or our lovely normal summertime rain pattern, I don’t know.
